The current and future of business is digital. A big part of that consists of social media and search results.
Long gone are the days when you could create a free and viable word of mouth campaign with just social media. Organic sharing is becoming less predictable.
Facebook, for example, has dropped the exposure rate for brand pages from 100% to 1-10%. Google+ is rumored to shut down. Plus, there is a large problem with social media fragmentation – posting to Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Google+, Flickr, LinkedIn, etc.
What do you do?
Additionally, social media and word of mouth marketing both rely on existing clients to sing your praise.
- What if you have no existing clients?
- What if you want to price out of your existing pool of referrals?
- What if you simply want more traffic?
- What if you relocate?
- And even if you have the traffic, are you converting them?
This is where branding, content strategy, search engine optimization (SEO), and conversion come into play first. Next, you use word of mouth and social media to propel your efforts.

P.S. The idea of presenting on CL is frightening. Last time I was on, JD (Jasmine’s husband) gave me a shot of tequila. This time, he won’t be around. Photo by JD.
Hi Lawrence,
I thought your lecture on CL was excellent. And I’m not even a photographer. My background is in documentary film making & video. I’m currently trying to pivot my business and I got a lot of inspiration from your talk. The only improvement I could have wished for would be more tips for video people and YouTube. Many thanks anyway – I’m following you on twitter and FaceBook.

Hi Adrian,
Glad you enjoyed the course! I tried to stick with strategies as much as possible, making it possible for other people in different trades to apply the tactics. It still boils down to understanding your target audience, building valuable content for them, and optimizing the content so that they can be found, read, and shared.
Cheers,
Lawrence

Hi Lawrence! I watched your CreativeLive show and it was absolutely great! It’s a lot to digest but you really provided a lot of very, very helpful information and explained it in a way that was easy to understand and digest. I do product/food photography and not wedding photography. I also make gemstone jewelry. I have some questions after watching your show:
1. I do graphic design, web design and photography. I currently have one website (studiosixseventy.com). You mentioned having many websites. Should I have one website for graphic design, one site for web design, and one site for product photography? And if so, do I link to all of them? For example, on the graphic design site, should I say if you are interested in web design click here? If I need to make separate websites I currently use Bluehost.com. Do I need different domain names for each site? Can I use an add-on domain?
2. I also make gemstone jewelry (samandchloe.com). Can I link to my design website? If so, how would I tie this in?
Thank you so much for the wonderful class! So far your class was the best one yet!!

That’s no easy question to answer. If you cannot distinguish the services clearly, then clarity might come with separate profiles. However, if you put them all under one roof of a “media” house, then it all makes sense. Do you get what I’m saying?
Good luck, Joanne!

I know I’m a bit late to this conversation :/… I purchased your CL course and just now going through it little by little as I am setting up my new WP site. I just watched all the segments on SEO, but it seems like you didn’t talk about image size (or maybe I haven’t got to that video yet??). Do you have any recommendations on resolution, size and file type so the photos will load fast but still look good? Thank you! Loved the course btw, it’s been very useful, so glad I purchased it! Hi Eva,
Similar to how I answer all of my questions, it always depends. There is no optimal size because all themes are different. Some dynamically resize, while others do not. The main strategy to keep in mind is the best possible loading time.
Many a time, load time is affected less by image size, but more by server speed. So, if you’re using a shared server, which is slower, but cheaper, keep in mind to not save files at 1MB each (at least for now). In Photoshop, you can save files optimized for the web. I hope that helps, Eva.
Cheers,
Lawrence
